A report on Board action

Regular Meeting

Cumberland County Board of Education

August 9, 2005

New Organization to Handle Billing
The Board agreed that the North Carolina School Board Association (NCSBA) will provide Medicaid Fee for Service claiming for the Cumberland County Schools (CCS).  The NCSBA will process Medicaid billing and handle the collection of school-based, health-related services.  Deloitte Consulting previously handled the school system’s Medicaid billing.

Life Insurance Vendor to Change
The Board voted to change the school system’s term life insurance vendor to KMG, effective January 1, 2006.  According to CCS’ Associate Superintendent of Business Operations Ricky Lopes, the insurance carrier has lower rates for term life insurance.  The school system has used MetLife Insurance since 1986.

Eaton to Energize Science Library
During the Superintendent’s Update, Dr. Harrison announced that the Eaton Electrical Corporation will present a $25,000 check to the school system for the purchase of Science Inquiry Libraries.  The presentation will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 10, 2005, at E.E. Miller Elementary.  Through this grant, every elementary school will receive Science Inquiry Libraries.  In January, Eaton Electrical Corporation, who is a long-time partner of the school system and the countywide literacy effort, presented a check for $20,000 to enhance secondary classroom libraries.

Students and Staff Recognition
Associate Superintendent Joe Dunham recognized the following staff and community members for their achievements:

Fort Bragg Youth Education Support Services Director Glenda Mack and Fort Bragg Liaison Officers Shevelle Ramirez, Gerhard Guevarra, and Emily Grimes received a certificate of appreciation for their partnership with the CCS.  Recently, during the 7th Annual Conference of the Military Child Education Coalition in Atlanta, Fort Bragg and the CCS were awarded the Pete Taylor Partnership of Excellence Award, which is designed to encourage and promote outstanding partnerships between military installations and school districts.  More than 17,000 military-connected students attend Cumberland County schools.

E.E. Smith High School Senior Project Coordinators Latonja Harris-Council (current) and Christine Henry (former) and their principal, Rene’ Corders, were recognized for receiving the Annual Senior Project High School Recognition Award from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and the North Carolina Business Committee on Education.  The award applauds the quality of senior projects at E.E. Smith as well as the school-based process the faculty and staff have implemented toward the educational experience.  The awards committee found that the school’s senior project handbook was comprehensive, well organized, and self-explanatory.  The members were impressed with the quality of senior project topics as well as the approval process that is used.  They also applauded the impact the senior projects had on the community, the school, and the senior class.  By the 2006-2007 school year, the senior project will become a part of high school exit standard requirements statewide for the entering freshman class.
